While 2020 was characterized by one breaking news story after another, the year began for us with a trip that, in retrospect, will probably be our last great experience for a long time – or at least one that we will never forget, regardless of all other circumstances.
In early 2020, on a two-week trip through Guatemala, we produced the short documentary "Coffee for Life." The film provides insights into the cultivation of fair-trade coffee that are more personal and intimate than most people know. We had the chance to be very close to Guatemalan smallholder farmers and their families, accompanying them as they worked and lived in a remote world.
All footage was captured handheld by the two of us (Lennart and Wilhelm), as we traveled with very small camera setups to remain as flexible as possible. Along our journey, we met people who truly deserve to be paid fair rates for their hard work, as well as those who passionately support the farmers and their families. The organization Manos Campesinas supports Guatemala’s smallholders by organizing and developing their work and selling their products to customers abroad.
